Mission statement:

 

Reading teachers make a difference in children’s reading achievement and motivation to read.  Our department believes as teachers we contribute to reading success by understanding how literacy develops in children, assessing progress and relating instruction to previous experience, knowing a variety of ways to teach reading, providing a range of materials and texts to student readers, and providing the students with a solid knowledge base and extensive supervised practice.  We also motivate students, encourage independent learning, have high expectations for achievement, and help those who are having difficulty. Successful lifelong readers and writers is the goal.
